Last year, I spent hours and hours photographing them to obtain a small batch of photos I was very pleased with. Thus, I thought I was pretty on top of the cyclamen population.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 335px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_At-SawoZaCQ/TGQGPDhKH5I/AAAAAAAAAHo/0Nvjkj6KmKs/s400/IMG_2126.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5504531500265774994" /> Imagine my surprise when I found this speckled, purple and white specimen behind our garbage can. Our neighbors insist on burning copious amounts of yard waste in their back yard - despite the danger inherent in doing so during the usually dry summer and in violation of city law. Our neighbor's behavior has inspired The Boyfriend to take up the mantle of "Neighborhood Asshole" - a role that had recently been played by our next door neighbor until his untimely death by cancer. Considering our neighborhood is a tinderbox of dry pine needles...I can't say that I blame him. The darkish spot where it is planted provides some nice light/shadow contrast - very chiaroscuro!

The Lakewood Post Office, where our PO box is located, is next to K-Mart. As the garden season gathered steam the plant display outside the store grows larger, until I'm compelled to wander over to take a look. Lately, the plants have been looking rather sad - it appears the store employees don't maintain a good watering schedule. However, this is a situation ripe for a vigorous, strong-willed plant to rise above the rest. Amongst the sad looking plants I spied this yellow Columbine. I didn't get it that day, but had to go back the next day and save it from its K-Mart fate.

I put it in the dirt strip of our greenhouse at the darker end, where it is keeping company with some variegated violets. Because the deer seem to be able to find whatever young plant I put out in the front yard, the plan is to let this plant increase in size for a year or two - harvesting seeds whenever possible, and eventually planting it out front some day when I can carve out a spot for my growing Columbine collection. Which reminds me - gotta get those dark purple and double pink Columbine seeds into some starting mix.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 395px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_At-SawoZaCQ/TFSbvXMy5gI/AAAAAAAAAGw/0DYpHkRjkbw/s400/LtPurpleColumbine02.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5500192282910057986" /> Above: Current Lakewood Manor resident - light purple Columbine.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 326px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_At-SawoZaCQ/TFSbhtfh8AI/AAAAAAAAAGo/i8rKSZmtBtA/s400/ColumbineXcrop02.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5500192048376049666" /> Above: Another current resident - maroon double bloom Columbine.

Hibiscus Time!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 276px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_At-SawoZaCQ/TFBsfVXJgBI/AAAAAAAAAGY/f_5FZgVAvXs/s400/IMG_1984.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5499014430585356306" />
This post features images of the first Hibiscus bloom of 2010. I have never seen this plant looking so good and, more importantly, aphid free! This plant, which I inherited with the greenhouse, had proven to be an irresistible aphid magnet. I must have sprayed the thing with soapy water solution dozens of times last year. This is the type of situation that has me reaching for systemic chemical pesticides, especially in January or February, when I begin to stock the greenhouse with young seedlings. I WILL wield chemicals when it comes to my ornamental plants. Aphids on a mature, large plant is one thing; its another thing entirely when it comes to young seedlings. You might as well invite Dracula to spend the night in a hospital nursery so he can suck the blood out of newborns.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 262px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_At-SawoZaCQ/TFBsfCbTCsI/AAAAAAAAAGQ/jsDAeeuhgwQ/s400/IMG_1986.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5499014425502485186" />
Last year, I went so far as to put it outside overnight in winter to kill the buggers; a part of me wanted to leave it there to die, but The Boyfriend convinced me to bring it back into the warmth of the greenhouse the next day. I guess I'm a heartless Flora-Bitch at times. In January of this year, in a preemptive, desperate measure, I cut every shred of green off this plant in an attempt to starve the aphids during the crucial "many seedlings" phase of late winter. After all, they won't attack a plant devoid of juicy green growth. I savagely reduced it to a mere stick sitting in a pot of dirt. "Show me what you've got" I said to The Stick. "Prove to me you are worth the trouble." And show me it did - the plant is lush, lush, lush - and covered in flower buds waiting to pop. Its a survivor!

I'd have a third photo here if Blogger hadn't decided to stop uploading my images. Which in turn results in photos that are a little too blurry. Since I wanted to cut several down for a bouquet, I decided to try out the lightbox and experiment with artificial light.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_At-SawoZaCQ/TEmgfPitYQI/AAAAAAAAAGA/AceZTsL_du8/s400/IMG_1872EDITED.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5497101278790902018" /> The two photos posted here are the best of the batch - I love how white and clean the light is. I used the "vibrant" color setting on the camera, and did some very simple photo editing using Microsoft Photo Editor to achieve a "painterly" effect (Photoshop will be entering my life soon - I have a feeling I'll be talking about my life in terms of "pre-Photoshop" or "post-Photoshop" once I open that Pandora's box). Bringing plant life into the house to photograph in the lightbox has been in the back of my mind for a while, and this is the first time I have done it. I am thrilled with the results, and am looking forward to dragging all manner of plant materials into the house this winter for the lightbox treatment.

Better Off Dead

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 272px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_At-SawoZaCQ/TEeiMngsPuI/AAAAAAAAAF4/WWZVtLHf708/s400/CROP.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5496540207877209826" />
Some plants are better off dead, or nearly so, in that they look much more interesting that way. I am a big fan of the Poinsettia plant - not in December, but weeks later - maybe March. By that time, the owner has long since stopped watering it and the leaves have curled up into fascinating shapes far more interesting than the original live plant.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 326px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_At-SawoZaCQ/TEeiMGJMGOI/AAAAAAAAAFw/nARpMP1hNwI/s400/IMG_1843.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5496540198920263906" />
I feel the same way about the common type of Day Lilly (Hemerocallis) - I guess I have seen one too many run of the mill orange and yellow specimens. The Day Lilly pictured here (they came with the house) is from my front yard. Why do I have them at all? They came with the house. With a little evening back-lighting and Death breathing down its neck, the common orange Day Lilly is transformed into "botanical stained glass". I had a tough time getting the entire image in sharp focus, but decided the vibrant colors mitigated that shortcoming, and made them worth showing off.

Peak Groundcover Performance

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 304px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_At-SawoZaCQ/TEYWesaVw0I/AAAAAAAAAFo/XOhKTaOFgqk/s400/IMG_1776.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5496105111825793858" /> Above: Sedum spurium (aka "John Creech Sedum") flower

Ground cover plants continue to provide interest and amazement as the summer wears on. The colors are washed out and there is glare everywhere. Despite the sunny weather, I was determined to get some flowers photographed today - I needed to cleanse my photographic "palate" after spending two days photographing aircraft at the Joint Base Lewis-McChord Air Expo 2010. While I was able to take some great shots of the static displays, photographing plants doesn't prepare one for photographing jets. I'll leave that to the folks with foot long telephoto, wide angle lenses! Just try and find a fighter jet in a clear blue sky without one - by the time you've located it - its gone.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_At-SawoZaCQ/TETUZlXPUsI/AAAAAAAAAFA/eIMXJEoGffM/s400/IMG_1745.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5495750981290250946" /> The Shirley Poppies pictured here were photographed from underneath on a brilliant, sunny day - makes you want to stretch for the sun!

Go Spider Go!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 257px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_At-SawoZaCQ/TDygVRAEskI/AAAAAAAAAE4/7avPT4RM5Js/s400/SpiderJUL-13.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5493441932686570050" /> Above: Unidentified spider hard at work on my Zebra plant

I should know better than to leave my camera in the house when I do my greenhouse chores. We have so much Sedum on our property, I expect to wake up one morning to find it has invaded the house. Summer is finally here in the Puget Sound region, and July 8 brought high temps between 93-95 degrees, along with the annual drought season. Despite copious watering via hose and irrigation system, most plants in the vegetable/flower garden are wilting in the heat. As the photo above illustrates - 90-plus Fahrenheit is no problem for this Sedum flower which, along with other blooming groundcovers, provides much-needed color after the spring flowers are long gone. Good thing, because it will be a cold day in hell before I start watering the extensive front yard! Called "Queen of the Night" or "Orchid Cactus", the flower is from Epiphyllum oxypetalum, a large, mature succulent plant that belonged to my late father-in-law.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 362px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_At-SawoZaCQ/TDDH44-ZPXI/AAAAAAAAADg/03EuYC802ek/s400/IMG_1231.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5490107725945322866" />
Within a few hours, the flower had opened. If we are lucky, we'll hit 68 degrees today. Having lived here for 20+ years, I should be used to it, along with the effort it takes to live as if the sun was out. Obviously - you can't have the lush green without the abundance of rain. Maybe I'm extra peeved because I recently spent countless hours trying to re-install an irrigation system in the garden - only to find that the garden won't need water for days. You just have to suck it up and be "Thankful for the Green".

var _gaq = _gaq || [];
_gaq.push(['_setAccount', 'UA-17442042-1']);
_gaq.push(['_trackPageview']);

(function() {
var ga = document.createElement('script'); ga.type = 'text/javascript'; ga.async = true;
ga.src = ('https:' == document.location.protocol ? I'll let Wikipedia explain:

"The concept was first laid out in The Emerald Tablet of Hermes Trismegistus, in the words 'That which is Below corresponds to that which is Above, and that which is Above, corresponds to that which is Below, to accomplish the miracles of the One Thing'. In accordance with the various levels of reality: physical, mental, and spiritual, this relates that what happens on any level happens on every other. This is however more often used in the sense of the microcosm and the macrocosm. The microcosm is oneself, and the macrocosm is the universe. The macrocosm is as the microcosm, and vice versa; within each lies the other, and through understanding one (usually the microcosm) you can understand the other."

I've been pondering this concept lately as my partner and I struggle with the various landscaping and yard work projects on our one-acre property, which I call "Lakewood Manor". After the unexpected death of his mother in October 2008, my partner, an only child, inherited the house he grew up in, as his father had passed away from cancer over a decade ago.

Cleaning and organizing a 2000 square foot house was a task that dominated our weekends for nearly two months. The house yielded a glorious mess of garbage, curios, collectibles and antiques - and one 35mm, black and white 70's porno film! Thirty years of possessions, some clearly treasured, others merely stuck in the garage to await their future fate - passed through our hands. We calculated that we removed approximately 3.5 TONS of garbage from the house. This experience cured me of my hobby of browsing through thrift stores and consignment shops, looking for something I knew I did not need, but always walking out the door with a vintage ashtray or used book I knew I'd never read.

What does this have to do with yard work?

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_At-SawoZaCQ/TCi339vCt0I/AAAAAAAAACw/kenCXfQOBOM/s400/IMG_1064.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5487838318043510594" /> (Another section shown above).

Both of my partner's parents were into plants in their own way. His father came from a Georgia farming family and was an avid gardener who also maintained a collection of tropical plants in the greenhouse. His Japanese-born mother landscaped the front yard. She was adept at propagation, and was especially fond of propagating flowering shrubs. Unfortunately - the yard reflects the condition of the house when we acquired it: thirty years of plant collecting gone wild will require the same sort of dedication we applied to bringing order to the house. I must have removed several pounds of Hoya plant vine from the greenhouse - imagine nearly 15 pots of Hoyas left to its own devices for years. Visualize over a decade of volunteer mustard plants going to seed. Picture years and years of numerous ground cover plants slowly taking up more and more space - that is our project for the next few years. Being located in an out-of-the-way spot, at least we don't have to worry about the uninvited opinion of the neighbors.

As above, so below = As inside, so outside.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_At-SawoZaCQ/TCi9YGW4PnI/AAAAAAAAADA/h1svDtzA_1c/s400/IMG_1061.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5487844367672032882" />

Poppy Frenzy II - Hop Right In and Watch Us Make Seeds

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_At-SawoZaCQ/TCUlTTx2c1I/AAAAAAAAACo/F3nm8VTUw6k/s400/IMG_0900.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5486832734677922642" /> I work the macro function of my camera pretty hard, preferring to photograph plants up close and/or from unusual angles. As a future landscape architect, sometimes I wonder if I'll ever evolve away from this to images that are more "landscapy". In Twyla Tharp's book "The Creative Habit: Learn It and Use It for Life", she notes that individuals may be hard wired to create from a particular point of view - some love the up close detail perspective such as I, and some don't. Whew - thanks Twyla - its my "hard wiring" and I can't help it. She may not be the world's foremost expert on creativity, but I'll take it. Cross that off my list of "Things I Need To Change".
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 330px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_At-SawoZaCQ/TCUlSq7g1JI/AAAAAAAAACg/WYS3bU2f7XM/s400/IMG_0873.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5486832723712595090" /> Its hard to resist the iconic poppy - and even harder to take a photo of them that is not cliche. Out of curiosity, I Googled "poppy images" to see how many there were out there via Google. How many? 4,760,000! Over Four Million images via Google alone. I guess I can rest easy knowing its tough to create an original poppy image.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_At-SawoZaCQ/TCUkRdlA3II/AAAAAAAAACY/fWTA2r5sNLo/s400/IMG_1032.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5486831603437067394" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_At-SawoZaCQ/TCUkQg1cXLI/AAAAAAAAACQ/vX3RaQG_mXQ/s400/IMG_0866.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5486831587131415730" />

Poppy Frenzy

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 275px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_At-SawoZaCQ/TCUaUBSZ6JI/AAAAAAAAABg/E0Fqlcy_Vu8/s320/Poppy02.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5486820652266154130" />As my flowers bloom throughout the year, I will become obsessed with one specific flower and will photograph it over and over until I have images I am satisfied with. At the present time its all about poppies. My light pink poppy was the first to bloom - only to break off right below the flower - pissing me off to no end - what the hell can you do with a decapitated poppy? Then it dawned on me to pose it with one of the many, many plants in our yard.
